The Torrance Art Museum proudly presents FORUM 1 and PERMUTATIONS

Exhibitions run Tuesday through Saturday, 11am to 5pm, through December 15
FORUM 1 is the culmination of a 10-month mentorship program with a cohort of eighteen young art professionals. The first of its kind, the program was designed to support the group by connecting them with established art professionals in Los Angeles—providing a space in which to interact with and learn from them. FORUM 1 participants were chosen based on the level of curiosity they had for one another; the drive to learn. The cohort has found strength in the diversity of art and curatorial practices they have as a group. Instead of striving to assimilate the variety of work into a theme, the group decided to display the work in a way that allows the visitor to engage with each individual practice on a personal level.

PERMUTATIONS
A discussion about artworks with an ever-changing existence
Artists: Justin Loza Gomez, Randi Hokett, Iain Muirhead, Michael Nannery, Tu Nguyen
Concepts and ideas always evolve from their initial birth. Our process as curators, artists, writers and most importantly human beings is not immune to this change. As an exhibition Permutations was born out of the changing existence of past ideas and sets forth the ground work for new ones.
Permutations was conceived as a reactionary exploration of artistic practices and not the final works that emerge from them. Michael Nannery creates intimate experiences and environments in his works using living plants. Randi Hokett dubs her studio “Randi’s House of Dangerous Behavior” and experiments with growing a variety of crystals in her artistic practice. Justin Loza Gomez creates site specific works on the streets of Los Angeles that play with language, philosophy and physical space. Iain Muirhead creates sculptural works using collected materials and his practice is one of questions: What happens when ideas about material, form, and space enter the real world? Tu Nguyen creates sight specific installations that play with sensory and perceptual ideas to expound upon memory and human experience.
The curatorial team for Permutations welcomed change into this process as well. The discovery that this show would not be about death, but about life, was a wonderful one. Life and death are about change. This show will direct you through it and into new spaces and ways of engaging.
