SUMMARY:WMoF Celebrity Series: Generations of Progress/Women in the US Armed Forces
DESCRIPTION:March is Woman in History Month. The Western Museum of Flight (WMoF) is fortunate to have Rear Admiral Sandra E. "Sandy" Adams (Ret) as the Celebrity Lecture Speaker this month. Adams served over 30 years in the Navy, commanding five units including reserve headquarters for Naval Forces Japan, and U.S. Pacific Command. Adams was Deputy Commander, Navy Region Midwest and later, Deputy Command (over 20,000 military men and women), Naval Expeditionary Combat Command and Surface Warrant Officer. In 2010, Adams deployed to Afghanistan serving as Senior Adviser to Afghan Minister of Defense Lieutenant General. She has been awarded the Legion of Merit (two awards), Defense Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medal (three awards). So who better to tell WMoF members and guests about women in the military today. Admiral Adams, who will describe for us the steady progress and impressive contributions women have made in the US Armed Forces. The opportunities are many and serve as an inspiration and motivation for ambitious young women from all walks of our society. In 1993, only 67% of military positions were open to women. Today, that number is 99%. In fact, the number of women in the armed services -- and subsequent veteran population -- is rapidly increasing. According to the Defense Department, women now make up 20 percent of the Air Force, 19 percent of the Navy, 15 percent of the Army and almost 9 percent of the Marine Corps. As always, WMoF Lecture Series is open to the public. WMoF members are granted entry via their membership and guests are $10 (psst: a yearlong membership is only $60.). Always free parking at the airport.<br/>Join us to hear this stimulating narrative. Visit our website: www.wmof.com
