SUMMARY:WMoF Celebrity Series: The Douglas Legacy - A Continuing Tradition
DESCRIPTION:When you think of the Doulas Corporation (DC) you most likely think of a large South Bay airplane manufacturer. Well, on February 17th, the Western Museum of Flight (WMoF) Celebrity Series gives you a chance to hear Mike Machat, official Douglas Company artist, historian and author, tell you about DC. The DC – it is 97 years old - was around before there was a South Bay. DC was a major factor in military service … some 20 years before the Air Force was born. DC made the famous "FIRST AROUND THE WORLD - FIRST THE WORLD AROUND" plane for the Army Air Service. Machat will present a compendium of the history and achievements of Donald Douglas.

His presentation will include company origins, design philosophies, and descriptions of some of its most memorable and historically influential aircraft. (The company logo evolved when the Douglas airplanes helped establish commercial airline travel (remember the DC3?) as a viable business. DC’s military contributions are legendary, to include the venerable Skytrains, which carried millions of tons of cargo, hundreds of thousands of troops, and also delivered paratroops into some of the most dangerous combat zones of WWII.

Additionally, Douglas tactical airplanes made numerous contributions to the US Navy and Air Force success in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.

WMoF Members free. Non-Members: $10. Parking Available in Museum Lot. ore information at http://www.wmof.com/upcomingevents.pdf.

*** Special note, The WMoF’s own own A-4 Skyhawk will be on display for the event. Skyhawk pilots and Douglas veterans will also be on hand to meet attendees and answer questions. ***
