For over 30 years, South Bay residents have driven past a large ship’s anchor in front of a white Greek revival office building located on the corner of Carson St. and Del Amo Circle East – smack dab between the two sides of the Del Amo Fashion Center. Yet few know the history of this 18-foot, 16-ton ship’s anchor that has been dry-docked here for over three decades. The Torrance Historical Society has invited Kevin M. Anthoney, maritime and ocean liner historian, writer and shipboard speaker, to unravel the mystery of this landmark, which took him two-and-a-half years of research and investigation. His efforts of discovery have been recognized by the Maritime Historical community, and have been published. Mr. Anthoney is a southern California native, former South Bay resident, graduate of Palos Verdes High School and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Cal State University, Long Beach.
